INDIANAPOLIS – Cam Newton was determined to take the scouting combine by storm last February.
Maybe too determined.
Newton's combine became arguably the 2011offensive rookie of the year's most humbling NFL experience to date. Yet it helped propel the Carolina Panthers quarterback's record-setting season.
Serving as Newton's mentor, Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon advised the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner to continue refining his mechanics and hold off on throwing for 32 team evaluators until his March 8 pro day at Auburn University.
But ultraconfident Newton embraced the Lucas Oil Stadium proving ground.
His erratic passing, however, heightened concerns that were raised before the combine when Newton said, "I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and an icon."
Newton spent the next two months disproving many doubters and convincing the Panthers he was a franchise transformer worthy of the top overall draft pick.
In retrospect, Newton's Indy reality check provided an unscripted test of resolve that no drill could mimic.
